Horror is one popular genre among the anime community; the thrill of it is one we like to eat up gratefully while curled up in a dark room under our blankets, our insatiable appetite for gore and death whetted – just me? No? I thought so. Horror anime is an underappreciated genre filled with gems.

Some may say the genre lacks appeal; however, a few have stood out, and you would probably love to watch. So, if you’re looking for something dark and thrilling to stir up the adrenaline or trying to get over a gut-wrenching heartbreak by immersing yourself in something more emotionally troubling than your own life, I have just the compilation for you.

My personal favourite; Shiki. It begins in the small idle town of Sotoba where everybody knows everybody, but Megumi Shimizu has high aspirations and longs for life in the city. Her sudden death spells the first stroke of tragedy for the small town.

Natsuno Yuuki, an aloof teenage boy, has just moved from the city and had become acquainted with Megumi before her demise. Over the summer, more unexplainable deaths continue to rise, stirring the suspicion of the town’s doctor, Toshio Ozaki, and Natsuno Yuuki who team up to investigate the sinister occurrences in the town.

The mystery continues to unfold, leading the team to discover eerie secrets held by the family that moved into the Kanesama mansion.

Angels of Death

Rachel Gardner witnesses a murder and is taken for counselling, her only wish is to die, and while stuck on floor B7 of a strange building, she meets Zac, a bandaged murderer who promises to kill her if she helps him escape the building. On their journey through the floors they encounter a new boss, each more bloodthirsty and crazier than the last, until the final floor when Rachel discovers something gruesome about herself and her relationship with the building.

Elfen Lied

Lucy is a Diclonius girl, a unique type of human with horns and psychokinetic hands, who becomes a victim of the government’s cruel scientific research. The incarceration and abuse, however, have warped Lucy, and when she finally has a chance to escape, she unleashes a bloodbath on her captors.

She suffers a severe head injury during her breakout, splitting herself into two distinct people: a childlike personality with limited verbal abilities. In this unstable state, she meets Kouta and his cousin Yuka, two college students, who unintentionally take a wounded fugitive into their care without knowing that she has a history of murder. Their lives will be forever altered by this act of goodwill because they are soon drawn into the darker world of political intrigue and conspiracy.

Highschool of the Dead

The dead started to resurrect, and Japan descended into absolute chaos. Takashi Kimuro is forced to kill his best friend when he is bitten and turns into one of the walking dead as these monsters start terrorizing a high school. They almost escape their death trap of a school only to be met with a fallen society after swearing to defend Rei Miyamoto, the girlfriend of the man he just killed.

Soon, Takashi and Rei team up with other students to search for their families and learn what sparked this devastating pandemic. They are joined by Saya Takagi, the daughter of a powerful senator; Saeko Busujima, the attractive president of the Kendo Club; Kouta Hirano, a gun-obsessed otaku, and Shizuka Marikawa, their attractive school nurse. But can these people defeat the zombie apocalypse with their united strength?
